Some twists and turns are carefully planned. Many are not. Careers change, opportunities appear unexpectedly, business evolves, and sometimes life throws us something that changes everything. As the founder of CIRK Advisory, I have lived through these twists and turns.
Before becoming a business advisor, I spent 16 years in the Australian Defence Force (8 years Army, 8 years Air Force), including service in Iraq and being part of the medical retrieval response following the 2002 Bali bombings.
After leaving the Defence Force, I naively started my first business, founded on military-style leadership, discipline, systems, and processes. I say naively because I had zero business knowledge. Thankfully, this business was financially stable, but I made many mistakes and, over time, discovered something that many business owners eventually face.
I built myself a job, disguised as a business. Then life changed.
An unexpected event meant I could no longer run the business. Eventually, I closed the doors and walked away, paying a high personal price and leaving behind real growth opportunities because I didn’t have the knowledge or support to capitalise on the hard work already done.
Returning to university, I graduated with an MBA and continued my lifelong learning, gaining a certificate in digital marketing and certification as a Professional Business Advisor with the Institute of Advisors.
During those years of study, there were many moments: “Ahh, that’s what I did wrong; that’s what I could have done better.” One realisation was that being great at what you do isn’t the same as being great at business, and that can stop business growth.
Most business owners CIRK Advisory works with are in the same position. These experiences, and supporting over 200 startups through a government program, have shaped CIRK Advisory.
CIRK Method
Growing a business doesn’t just happen. It’s a deliberate choice that means building one that can withstand change and ultimately give you choices about the life you want.
Everything CIRK runs through four disciplines:
Business is personal. Your advice should be too.
You choose the level of support and guidance that suits your needs, goals, and budget.
Most importantly, we work together. You are the expert in your business; we are experts in business growth, offering executive-level thinking, support and guidance.
Running a business can be demanding. CIRK Advisory helps business owners gain clarity, tackle the challenges holding them back, and make practical decisions that create stronger, more sustainable businesses.
